Testimonials - Contemplating dental implant surgery

Not the most riveting title, however a most important process in arriving at what could prove to be a life-changing decision.

That probably sounds somewhat overblown, but in fact knowing that one looks good can give untold confidence throughout one’s daily life – so what is there to consider?

Having reached this stage in one’s decision making, most other options will have been considered, and even tried, i.e. crowns, dentures, bridgework, therefore the fact that these thought processes are taking place probably means that the other options have been unsuccessful.

So one goes on to thinking about the surgery itself. Even after all the explanations it is not easy to comprehend the amount of work and time required, the pain which might be involved, one’s appearance during the periods of healing and finally the cost.

Taking one step at a time is the only way to approach this:

  1. Because of the different procedures required the whole process can take many months, the surgery time is limited to a few hours.
  2. The actual surgery is not painful since anaesthetics are administered and one can (if one wishes) see all that is happening. The only slight discomfort in my case was a feeling of pressure but this was easily bearable. (I would even say it was quite fun – much depends on one’s mental attitude).
  3. One’s appearance, apart from slight bruising together with a little feeling of tenderness, is unchanged, as a denture is provided whilst healing processes take place. Obviously some people heal more quickly than others but this should not be a terribly drawn-out length of time.
  4. The cost!  Yes it is expensive but one is paying for great expertise and care and surely if this procedure can improve the quality of one’s life then it is worth every penny.

As far as I am concerned, this surgery, carried out by skilful and caring surgeons, has resulted in my feeling much better about myself (not only my appearance); I can enjoy tastes now that were becoming lost to me; I am able to laugh with abandon in company, and I feel so confident about the implant itself, I know that it is there forever. I eat apples, crusty bread etc without a second thought, as the implant feels so firm in its place. Apart from this feeling of solidity, I am no longer terribly aware of the tooth, so finally all that I can say is: “Go ahead – do it – let it make a difference to you too!”
