Meet Asier – Periodontics and Peri-Implant Care

My name is Asier, and I’m a dentist with a strong focus on periodontics. I completed a three-year Master of Science (MSc) in Periodontics and Osseointegration, and I have also completed a master’s programme in dental laser treatments, with a special interest in peri-implant diseases. My main goal is to help patients keep their teeth and implants healthy for the long term, while also improving their comfort, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

Periodontal (gum) disease is much more than just bleeding gums. It is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, the bone around the teeth, and the ligament that keeps the teeth stable. Very often it develops slowly and without pain, which is why many people are not aware that they have it until it becomes more advanced.

One of the aspects of periodontics that interests me the most is the strong relationship between oral health and general health. Scientific research has shown that chronic inflammation in the gums can be linked to several systemic conditions. For example, there is a very well-known connection between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus – gum disease can make diabetes more difficult to control, and uncontrolled diabetes can also make periodontal disease more severe.

There is also growing evidence linking periodontal disease with cardiovascular disease. Chronic inflammation in the mouth can contribute to inflammation in the rest of the body, which may play a role in conditions such as heart disease. Similar links have been described with arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, where chronic inflammation is a very important factor. For this reason, when I see a patient for the first time, I always try to take a more holistic approach. We don’t only focus on the teeth and gums, but also on the overall health of the patient and how everything is connected.

Another very important part of periodontal treatment is long-term maintenance. Periodontal disease is a chronic condition, which means that once it has developed, it needs continuous monitoring and care. The good news is that with the correct diagnosis, the right treatment, and a good maintenance plan, we can control the disease and keep it stable for many years.

Maintenance includes regular periodontal reviews, professional cleaning tailored to each patient, and guidance on how to keep the gums healthy at home. This long-term follow-up is essential not only to keep the teeth healthy, but also to prevent further bone loss and maintain a comfortable and healthy mouth.

Periodontal care is also very important for aesthetics. Healthy gums are essential for a beautiful smile, and periodontal treatment can help reduce inflammation, improve the shape of the gums, and create a more balanced and natural appearance. In addition, periodontal health plays a key role in patients who already have dental implants or are thinking about having them in the future. Nowadays implants are very common, but they need healthy gums and proper maintenance to remain stable over time. Preventing and treating peri-implant diseases is a very important part of what I do in the clinic.

I’m really happy to be part of the team at Distinctive Dentistry, and I’m looking forward to helping our patients improve not only their smiles, but also their long-term health and quality of life.
