My Journey in Dental Nursing and Treatment Coordinating at Distinctive Dentistry

Hi, I’m Molly, I’m 23 years old, and I’ve been part of the team at Distinctive Dentistry for the past five years. Looking back, it’s incredible to see how much I’ve grown both personally and professionally since starting my journey as an apprentice dental nurse.

When I first entered the dental industry, I honestly had no idea just how rewarding and varied the profession could be. I joined the practice eager to learn, develop new skills, and build a career for myself, and that’s exactly what I’ve been able to do.

Starting as an Apprentice Dental Nurse

Beginning as an apprentice dental nurse gave me the perfect introduction to dentistry. I was able to learn hands-on in a real clinical environment while studying and gaining my qualifications at the same time.

In the early days, everything was new to me:

  • Learning infection control procedures
  • Preparing instruments and treatment rooms
  • Assisting dentists chairside
  • Understanding patient care
  • Building confidence in a fast-paced environment

At first, it felt overwhelming, but the support from my team at Distinctive Dentistry helped me grow in confidence very quickly. Over time, I became more comfortable assisting with a wide range of treatments and communicating with patients of all ages.

One of the things I love most about dental nursing is that no two days are ever the same. Every patient is different, and every day brings new experiences and learning opportunities.

Growing Into Treatment Coordinating

As I gained more experience within the practice, I became increasingly interested in the patient journey outside of the surgery itself. I realised how important communication, reassurance, and organisation are when helping patients feel comfortable with their treatment decisions.

This led me into treatment coordinating alongside my nursing role.

Becoming a treatment coordinator allowed me to develop a completely different side of my skills. I now spend time:

  • Explaining treatment plans to patients
  • Discussing finance options
  • Helping nervous patients feel reassured
  • Organising appointments and schedules
  • Supporting patients through smile transformation journeys

I especially enjoy helping patients build confidence before starting treatment. Sometimes patients arrive feeling anxious or unsure, and being able to guide them through the process and watch their confidence grow is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

Working in a Small-Town Private Practice

Working in a small-town private practice has such a personal feel to it. Over the years, I’ve built genuine relationships with so many patients and families within the community. You really get to know people, and I think that makes a huge difference in patient care.

Patients are not just names in a diary — they become familiar faces, and you truly care about their experience and wellbeing.

At Distinctive Dentistry, creating a welcoming and supportive environment is incredibly important to us. From the moment patients walk through the door, we want them to feel comfortable, listened to, and cared for.

Why I Love My Career

People often think dentistry is only about teeth, but it’s so much more than that. It’s about confidence, health, trust, and helping people feel good about themselves.

Starting as an apprentice at 18 and progressing within the practice has shown me how many opportunities there are within dentistry. I’m proud of how far I’ve come over the last five years, and I’m excited to continue learning and developing in my career.

For anyone considering dental nursing, I would honestly say go for it. It’s a challenging role at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding, and there are so many different pathways you can take within the profession.

Final Thoughts

My journey at Distinctive Dentistry has shaped me both professionally and personally. From nervous apprentice dental nurse to qualified dental nurse and treatment coordinator, I’ve gained confidence, knowledge, and a real passion for patient care.

I’m grateful to work within such a supportive team and to be part of a profession where I can make a positive difference to people every single day.

A Message from Sophie

As Practice Manager, I would like to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution of Ruth Williams as she retires from her role as Treatment Coordinator here at Distinctive Dentistry.

Ruth has been an integral part of our team for many years, and her dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient care have made a lasting impact on both our practice and the countless patients she has supported. Her ability to put patients at ease, guide them through their treatment journeys, and build genuine, trusting relationships is something truly special—and something that will be deeply missed by us all.

While it is never easy to say goodbye, we are so grateful for everything Ruth has given to Distinctive Dentistry and wish her a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.

At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Molly into the role of Treatment Coordinator. Molly has already received an incredible response from our patients, and it has been wonderful to see how quickly she has made the role her own. Her enthusiasm, warmth, and dedication to patient care make her a fantastic addition to the team.

We are excited to support Molly as she continues to grow and flourish here at Distinctive Dentistry, and we look forward to the future with great optimism.

On behalf of the entire team, thank you, Ruth—you will always be a valued part of our story.
